SMS verification: how Polifine uses text messaging

One-time passcodes for account sign-in only. No marketing, ever.

Brand and programme

Polifine is a free, nonpartisan voter information app published by Mojo4Good, a Michigan nonprofit corporation, and operated by MoJo Global Group, LLC. Polifine is available at www.polifine.org.

SMS is used for a single purpose: delivering a one-time passcode to a user who has just entered their own mobile number and asked to receive one. No marketing, promotional, political or campaign messages are sent on this campaign.

How users opt in

Opt-in is web-based and user-initiated at www.polifine.org/#/auth. On a screen headed “Verify your phone,” the user enters a US mobile number and taps “Send code.” Entering the number and tapping the button is the consent action.

Directly beneath the phone number field, the screen reads:

We’ll send a one-time verification code to this US phone number. Message frequency varies — one message per verification request. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help.

Beneath the buttons the screen reads: “By continuing you agree to our Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and About PoliFine.”

A “Continue as guest” button allows full use of the service without providing a mobile number, so SMS is never required to access Polifine.

The Polifine application is a JavaScript single-page application, so its screens cannot be read by a tool that fetches the page source. For that reason the opt-in screen is reproduced below as an image, exactly as a user sees it, and the full policy text is published on this domain at Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
